sally: there are dozens of families who lost loved ones when flight 93 crashed. mike: so many of them finding themselves coming back here time and time again. shelley talked with many family members sharing their stories. >> this is where flight 93

land acquisition attorney who lost his cousin on flight 93. >> he was like a younger brother. a lot of vacation time together, holidays, family time, always together. >> he was in utica, new york running a summer camp when he

learned about the death of his brother edward, a passenger on flight 93. >> i got the call. sandy said she heard that ed was on the plane that went down in pennsylvania. she asked me if i could go down until my mother.

>> you are not going to know what to say. >> debbie was in a church in san diego when she learned her daughter died on that flight. >> my cell phone rang and it was united airlines. i remember dropping the cell

phone. i remember screaming in the church and decry. -- and crying. i remember shouting out, "my baby is dead, my baby is gone." in spite of their sadness, those families refused to be

held hostage by grief and pain. instead, they embraced the legacies of their loved ones who embraced -- who were brave. they decided they were not going to sit by and be victimized by the terror on board the plane. >> they chose to act

collectively as a group. i think it is a story worth remembering, a story worth of memorializing. >> to help do that, families formed families of flight 93, their nonprofit organization with a seat at the table to

oversee the birth of the flight 93 national memorial. they decided to bond to this project, just as their loved ones did aboard flight 93. >> i treasure that. we did this with a sensitive spirit, a sense of passion and

heart, the same that those brave folks on the plane did it. >> patrick white and other family members donated time and energy to help design the memorial with the national park service, the national park foundation, and a host of other

agencies. they sat on the design committee, filtering through 1100 entries. they raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and, for their passion, the project was given a $2 million gift from universal studios, proceeds from

the movie "united 93." >> it was multilayered, multi-pronged, multitier effort. >> another edition is on the horizon. the tower of voices will spend 93 feet with 40 wind chimes, one child for every passenger and

crew member. -- chime for every passenger and >> the music and sound will represent the one group they became. >> in this memorial, the passengers of flight 93 have a voice and a message. sally: the memorial is the story

of american courage, determination, and ingenuity. mike: the sacrifice of the 40 heroes is revered, their presence deeply felt, not only in their names on the wall or the photos in the exhibit, but in the entire land renewed. sally: and so, the families of

the heroes, the local community, and the national park service of all insured that we will never , ever forget. for all of us here at "chronicle," thanks for watching. ♪♪
